In class writing Russell House Bad Attitude

Every day thousands of students taking a break from their studies to stop by USC's famous Russell House. Located in the center or campus, Russell House is always jammed pack. However the friendly atmosphere is brought down by those employees who work there. I am not generalizing the staff of the Russell House, because there have been a few employees who have been real helpful. But for the most part I think it's safe to say an attitude adjustment is in need. Employees lazily look at you and are very snippy at miniscule details. For example, I have been accussed of stealing ice by one employee, something that would be on the bottom of my list if I were to steal. Also the lack of communication some workers display is just rude. This problem can possibly be fixed free of cost, all the University needs is to give these workers a nice talk and perhaps people like myself would spend more money at the Russell House. Overall if these chances are effect put into place everyone wins.

In Class Writing Steriods

Pressure for high school kids to do performance enhancing drugs is ruining many sports such as baseball. My whole life I never thought the sport of baseball would be something I would not enjoy. After playing almost year around until I was seventeen I realized some people take the game a little too serious. At first when I started to play the game it was all about having fun with your friends on a nice sunny day. Little did I know those days would be short lived. It soon became five practices a week that took place rain, cold, or snow. It was no longer about having fun, but more so about winning. It soon turned into who was the biggest, fastest, and strongest. And then at some point banned growth substances like steroids were thrown in the picture. I never thought much of the drugs like steroids because I had never experienced it first hand. However it wasn't until I reached high school until I realized people were actually doing this. Playing at a Nationally renowned baseball school, the pressure to succeed overwhelmed many people I knew, but I stayed determined. None of my teammates did not use steriouds because it was illegal and we were tested, but I know my friends from my travel team did so at their school's and did so often. Still at my school legal performance enhancing drugs were used to help make everyone bigger. I wanted no part of this what so ever. Eventually I realized that some people had gotten so far ahead of me in size and speed that I had little playing time in my games. To me drugs like steroids weren't the correct path for me, and baseball wasn't baseball with them in the picture. So my Sophomore year after we had just won the state championship in baseball I decided that I could no longer partake in this sport I used to know as baseball. Coaches had gotten too serious and players had thrown away there morals. Overall drugs and sports don't mix, so walking away from the game wasn't hard for me, because it wasn't the game I grew to love anymore.

Credibility is the only thing that matters when writing a good paper. The most effective way to write is through a very credible research paper. The research paper is the most effective when presenting an argument because every last detail is referenced and can be easily accessed. When it comes to researching your issue you must take time to be efficient in setting up your arguments transition. When it comes to have credible sources, primary ones are the best way to go. Having first hand descriptions, interviews, and quotes from those who are actually involved in your issue can only enhance the overall quality of your argument. I can not emphasize enough how crucial it is the have concrete support in your research paper, because it gives your paper more credibility, which in turn will help your grade.

Better Late Than Never (SWA #3)

Fact is fact and everything else is argument. I say this simply because when something is not able to be proven a fact, that means it is still up for debate, which is a type of argument. Someone right now reading this blog could argue otherwise, and possibly even have supporting evidence that is equal if not better to mine. But the fact of the matter is every argument that occurs henceforth proves that arguments are everywhere. There are such things as very good arguments and very poor ones but regardless they are all the same. Take the example of someone claiming America is the best country in the world as a fact. Well, this bold statement has many flaws. If America is the best country than why are we billions of dollars in debt, constantly in a war, and suffering some of the most economic scrutiny in the history of man kind. However the other side of the argument has some valid points as well. One could argue America has the best food industry in the world, that they have the best sports, or that they have the most diverse population in the world. This right here is an example of a good argument. An example of a bad argument would be claiming that smoking cigarettes is good for your health. As everyone knows, smoking is horrible for you in many ways. But it can also be beneficial for those with particular medical needs such as in the early stages of an anxiety attack. This can be made into an argument, but not a very good one at all. All of these are valid arguments that should be taken into consideration when viewing the question. However I firmly believe and want to reiterate that anything that has not been scientifically proven is not a fact, but simply an argument.

Better Late Than Never (SWA#4)

When it comes to the frequent number of petty crimes in this country, I would say New York is the capitol. Everyday people pace around a giant concrete jungle in almost a zombie like mode. Many people going about their business bettering the world, others are quite the opposite. Like the article on page 39 suggests the staggering numbers of merger and insignificant burglaries is on the rise. The brutal honest truth of the situation is simply this, we could only hinder criminals, not put a stop to them all together. It would be impossible to assume that of the millions of people in New York, that there are not many criminals. If that does convince you, think about what you would do in a situation where you could easily gain one hundred dollars hanging from an old ladies purse on a bus one day. The fact of the matter is New York is not filled with pre-meditated criminals, but simply crime of opportunity criminals. I believe that the high rates of crime in New York will always be a problem as long as the criminals have something to steal. Like those in the article, we can only try, wait, and see what our efforts can do in this seemingly endless meager battle.

QUESTION 2

From looking at the posted articles on our blog my perception of Columbia's complete inability to address the issue of homelessness has been swayed a little bit. Yes there are several dozen health care organizations that do help aid these people in need. But then so again are there in every other major city in America. In fact most of these organizations only exist due to personal donations. The small numbers of organizations we have to help fund the homeless clearly indicates that the wealth of our state is low, perhaps in addition to our generosity. This only confirms that the government should take a more proactive role in deal with the homeless in cities like Columbia across America. Yes the website obviously advertises the fact that the government has take a role in the issue, but these groups need more money to be taken seriously. I think that the idea that the website brings forth is outstanding, but the support behind the vision can definitely use some work.

Short Writting Assignment

I firmly believe that all cities have an obligation to address the issue of inflated number of homeless people. This is why I choose the article that is for the support of our poor. With the economy being the way it is today it is almost unreasonable to assume that no citizen has hit rock bottom. Logically speaking if you have no money than you presumably do not have a home. Therefore all those whose wallets have been hit the worse have no place else to turn when all looks glum. If a city like Columbia were not to deal with the issue of homelessness, than they would have a large number of cities complaining even more than they are now. I personally have experienced the effects of homelessness in downtown Columbia like the author of this article. In addition I firmly support his claim that the issue is one of mass importance.

First is my response to the negatives of the word retard. This word is hate. Using it is demeaning and demoralizing a certain group of people who face enough struggle in their life's without it. The word is a negative slander created unjustly. In my belief the word should be considered as bad as other swear words, even though many people use it half heartily. This is why I think the word is so harmful.

Next is my response to the positives of the word retard. It is not hate it is association with a certain group of people. It can for warn people to know what group they are about to associate with. It can be used in conversation casually in some occasions. Even though many disagree with the use of this word it has its own benefits at times. (I don't condone the use of the word, but I am simply just doing this as an assignment).

American's Becoming Too Fat (Was rushed to write this)

1. American's diets are horrible. A large percent of our population is obese. This is a trend we must reverse.

2. This is unhealthy for America's future generations because morbid obesity can thwart our efforts to more forward in the future.

3. Positions
a. Obesity is horrible because it wastes money, food, and lives.
b. Production of food is higher than ever.
c. Horrible from a health point of view.

4. I simply read the article and have no more than a meer interest in the issue that is infesting so many people of so many ages in America.

Topic Proposal Part Deux

1. My issue is the controversial issue of illegal immigration. Every year thousands of illegal citizens come into America in hopes for a better future. These people in many cases assume low wage jobs and help small business' strive. However their working for such small payment has both positive and negative impacts on the U.S. economy. In addition the people take away jobs from many legal born American citizens. This issue is hot and heated to say the least.

2. People are beginning to become aware of the issue of illegal immigration because a vast number of citizens have been flowing into our country undeterred bringing about issues of border patrol, economic crisis, small business infractions, and the list goes on and on. There are several positives and negatives to having illegal citizens in our country.

3. Positions
a. I think that it is completely illegal and hypocritical to allow these illegal immigrants to assume the jobs and lifestyles of American's citizens, when even in some cases they thwart or deter other legal citizens.
b. From a small business owner's perspective this can really help your business reach higher levels of success.
c. These citizens help daunting tasks seem more manageable (ex:1996 Olympics in Atlanta preparation).

4. Being from Atlanta I have seen many of these citizens first hand. Also the Olympics was held in my hometown which necessitated several thousand of these people. I find it intriguing how people's opinion on the issue can change at any second, in addition to my personal desire to see a somewhat definite change occur in the near future whatever it may be.

Interesting Stuff I Found During Research

When I was researching I found out some very interesting information regarding the Olympics in Atlanta in 1996. In order for Atlanta as a city to be able to set up for such a monumental event such as the Olympics, the community had to hire several thousand illegal aliens to help. This is not only going against the tradition of the game, but even more so ironic. However it does show two countries working together towards one common goal. The overall number of illegal citizens in Atlanta after the Olympics went up almost two fold. This is some very intriguing information I found when researching for my Bibliography.

Once every four years the world’s finest athletes gather to compete in a series of competitions. This mass gathering is known as the Olympics. Many see the main purpose of the Olympics as winning as many medals as possible for one’s home country. However this mass gathering of cultures that only lasts about twenty five days takes years of coordinating and planning and is much more important than the medals. The few cities that are “fortunate” enough to be selected as hosts must make massive economic changes in order to successfully pull of such an event. In looking at the city of Atlanta, GA, who hosted the games in 1996, you can clearly see that hosting the “Summer Games” came along with consequences. This is the case because the drastic number of illegal immigrants that were brought in for the event’s labor. Though the immigrant population was initially welcomed for their services, the subsequent social and economic problems were devastating to the city from a social and political stand point, asking the ultimate question as to whether or not the Olympics are an event that is worthwhile.
