America Needs to Enforce Anti-Polygamy Laws More Sternly

In the last few years in America there has been an outburst of Polygamy issues. Even though that the practice of multiple marriages has already been deemed illegal in America, many people are starting to see that it is a law that has been taken lightly. Due to recent events that have occurred, the issue of polygamy has been brought to America’s attention. One example in particular was the Fort Concho, Texas polygamy community being raided. Here several hundred women and children had suffered significant mental and physical abuse in practices that clearly violated and contradicted American law. It is clear in looking at examples of polygamy issues throughout America, that the law that prohibits polygamy needs to be more strictly enforced so epidemics in communities like this can come to a complete end. This calls for the American Government to take more active role in enforcing a law that they have ignored for many years.

I don’t think you should go out with him. I heard that he doesn’t have a job and that he just broke up with his long-term girlfriend.

- This guy seems like he does not have much going on for him right now. Obviously there is something bad enough about him to prevent him from keeping him from a job and much more having a committed relationship.

Race is still an important consideration in American politics today. I recently heard President Bush speak about hate crimes in schools.

- Race is obviously an issue that is still prevalent in America. I say this because high profile politicians are even speaking about the issue today.

Reading “How to Say Nothing in Five Hundred Words,” by Paul Roberts, was almost like sitting down and listening to a lecture. There was tons of great and useful information, but I had nothing to relate it to.

- This book was very informative and resourceful, however it did not necessarily appeal to me as a book I would enjoy reading.

In Class Changing Sentence Structures

Practicing engineers and scientists say they spend half of their time writing memos and reports. This attitude shows a naive faith. In the competency of their secretaries, college students going into business think. Their secretaries will do their writing. For them, many of us foolishly object to taking courses. In writing students going into the technical or scientific fields may think that writing is something. They seldom have to do young business people, and seldom have private secretaries. Our notion that only poets and novelists have to write is unrealistic. Other things being equal. A person in any field who can express ideas, clearly is sure to succeed.

In class writing Russell House Bad Attitude

Every day thousands of students taking a break from their studies to stop by USC's famous Russell House. Located in the center or campus, Russell House is always jammed pack. However the friendly atmosphere is brought down by those employees who work there. I am not generalizing the staff of the Russell House, because there have been a few employees who have been real helpful. But for the most part I think it's safe to say an attitude adjustment is in need. Employees lazily look at you and are very snippy at miniscule details. For example, I have been accussed of stealing ice by one employee, something that would be on the bottom of my list if I were to steal. Also the lack of communication some workers display is just rude. This problem can possibly be fixed free of cost, all the University needs is to give these workers a nice talk and perhaps people like myself would spend more money at the Russell House. Overall if these chances are effect put into place everyone wins.

In Class Writing Steriods

Pressure for high school kids to do performance enhancing drugs is ruining many sports such as baseball. My whole life I never thought the sport of baseball would be something I would not enjoy. After playing almost year around until I was seventeen I realized some people take the game a little too serious. At first when I started to play the game it was all about having fun with your friends on a nice sunny day. Little did I know those days would be short lived. It soon became five practices a week that took place rain, cold, or snow. It was no longer about having fun, but more so about winning. It soon turned into who was the biggest, fastest, and strongest. And then at some point banned growth substances like steroids were thrown in the picture. I never thought much of the drugs like steroids because I had never experienced it first hand. However it wasn't until I reached high school until I realized people were actually doing this. Playing at a Nationally renowned baseball school, the pressure to succeed overwhelmed many people I knew, but I stayed determined. None of my teammates did not use steriouds because it was illegal and we were tested, but I know my friends from my travel team did so at their school's and did so often. Still at my school legal performance enhancing drugs were used to help make everyone bigger. I wanted no part of this what so ever. Eventually I realized that some people had gotten so far ahead of me in size and speed that I had little playing time in my games. To me drugs like steroids weren't the correct path for me, and baseball wasn't baseball with them in the picture. So my Sophomore year after we had just won the state championship in baseball I decided that I could no longer partake in this sport I used to know as baseball. Coaches had gotten too serious and players had thrown away there morals. Overall drugs and sports don't mix, so walking away from the game wasn't hard for me, because it wasn't the game I grew to love anymore.

Credibility is the only thing that matters when writing a good paper. The most effective way to write is through a very credible research paper. The research paper is the most effective when presenting an argument because every last detail is referenced and can be easily accessed. When it comes to researching your issue you must take time to be efficient in setting up your arguments transition. When it comes to have credible sources, primary ones are the best way to go. Having first hand descriptions, interviews, and quotes from those who are actually involved in your issue can only enhance the overall quality of your argument. I can not emphasize enough how crucial it is the have concrete support in your research paper, because it gives your paper more credibility, which in turn will help your grade.

Better Late Than Never (SWA #3)

Fact is fact and everything else is argument. I say this simply because when something is not able to be proven a fact, that means it is still up for debate, which is a type of argument. Someone right now reading this blog could argue otherwise, and possibly even have supporting evidence that is equal if not better to mine. But the fact of the matter is every argument that occurs henceforth proves that arguments are everywhere. There are such things as very good arguments and very poor ones but regardless they are all the same. Take the example of someone claiming America is the best country in the world as a fact. Well, this bold statement has many flaws. If America is the best country than why are we billions of dollars in debt, constantly in a war, and suffering some of the most economic scrutiny in the history of man kind. However the other side of the argument has some valid points as well. One could argue America has the best food industry in the world, that they have the best sports, or that they have the most diverse population in the world. This right here is an example of a good argument. An example of a bad argument would be claiming that smoking cigarettes is good for your health. As everyone knows, smoking is horrible for you in many ways. But it can also be beneficial for those with particular medical needs such as in the early stages of an anxiety attack. This can be made into an argument, but not a very good one at all. All of these are valid arguments that should be taken into consideration when viewing the question. However I firmly believe and want to reiterate that anything that has not been scientifically proven is not a fact, but simply an argument.

Better Late Than Never (SWA#4)

When it comes to the frequent number of petty crimes in this country, I would say New York is the capitol. Everyday people pace around a giant concrete jungle in almost a zombie like mode. Many people going about their business bettering the world, others are quite the opposite. Like the article on page 39 suggests the staggering numbers of merger and insignificant burglaries is on the rise. The brutal honest truth of the situation is simply this, we could only hinder criminals, not put a stop to them all together. It would be impossible to assume that of the millions of people in New York, that there are not many criminals. If that does convince you, think about what you would do in a situation where you could easily gain one hundred dollars hanging from an old ladies purse on a bus one day. The fact of the matter is New York is not filled with pre-meditated criminals, but simply crime of opportunity criminals. I believe that the high rates of crime in New York will always be a problem as long as the criminals have something to steal. Like those in the article, we can only try, wait, and see what our efforts can do in this seemingly endless meager battle.

QUESTION 2

From looking at the posted articles on our blog my perception of Columbia's complete inability to address the issue of homelessness has been swayed a little bit. Yes there are several dozen health care organizations that do help aid these people in need. But then so again are there in every other major city in America. In fact most of these organizations only exist due to personal donations. The small numbers of organizations we have to help fund the homeless clearly indicates that the wealth of our state is low, perhaps in addition to our generosity. This only confirms that the government should take a more proactive role in deal with the homeless in cities like Columbia across America. Yes the website obviously advertises the fact that the government has take a role in the issue, but these groups need more money to be taken seriously. I think that the idea that the website brings forth is outstanding, but the support behind the vision can definitely use some work.

Short Writting Assignment

I firmly believe that all cities have an obligation to address the issue of inflated number of homeless people. This is why I choose the article that is for the support of our poor. With the economy being the way it is today it is almost unreasonable to assume that no citizen has hit rock bottom. Logically speaking if you have no money than you presumably do not have a home. Therefore all those whose wallets have been hit the worse have no place else to turn when all looks glum. If a city like Columbia were not to deal with the issue of homelessness, than they would have a large number of cities complaining even more than they are now. I personally have experienced the effects of homelessness in downtown Columbia like the author of this article. In addition I firmly support his claim that the issue is one of mass importance.

First is my response to the negatives of the word retard. This word is hate. Using it is demeaning and demoralizing a certain group of people who face enough struggle in their life's without it. The word is a negative slander created unjustly. In my belief the word should be considered as bad as other swear words, even though many people use it half heartily. This is why I think the word is so harmful.

Next is my response to the positives of the word retard. It is not hate it is association with a certain group of people. It can for warn people to know what group they are about to associate with. It can be used in conversation casually in some occasions. Even though many disagree with the use of this word it has its own benefits at times. (I don't condone the use of the word, but I am simply just doing this as an assignment).

American's Becoming Too Fat (Was rushed to write this)

1. American's diets are horrible. A large percent of our population is obese. This is a trend we must reverse.

2. This is unhealthy for America's future generations because morbid obesity can thwart our efforts to more forward in the future.

3. Positions
a. Obesity is horrible because it wastes money, food, and lives.
b. Production of food is higher than ever.
c. Horrible from a health point of view.

4. I simply read the article and have no more than a meer interest in the issue that is infesting so many people of so many ages in America.

Topic Proposal Part Deux

1. My issue is the controversial issue of illegal immigration. Every year thousands of illegal citizens come into America in hopes for a better future. These people in many cases assume low wage jobs and help small business' strive. However their working for such small payment has both positive and negative impacts on the U.S. economy. In addition the people take away jobs from many legal born American citizens. This issue is hot and heated to say the least.

2. People are beginning to become aware of the issue of illegal immigration because a vast number of citizens have been flowing into our country undeterred bringing about issues of border patrol, economic crisis, small business infractions, and the list goes on and on. There are several positives and negatives to having illegal citizens in our country.

3. Positions
a. I think that it is completely illegal and hypocritical to allow these illegal immigrants to assume the jobs and lifestyles of American's citizens, when even in some cases they thwart or deter other legal citizens.
b. From a small business owner's perspective this can really help your business reach higher levels of success.
c. These citizens help daunting tasks seem more manageable (ex:1996 Olympics in Atlanta preparation).

4. Being from Atlanta I have seen many of these citizens first hand. Also the Olympics was held in my hometown which necessitated several thousand of these people. I find it intriguing how people's opinion on the issue can change at any second, in addition to my personal desire to see a somewhat definite change occur in the near future whatever it may be.

Interesting Stuff I Found During Research

When I was researching I found out some very interesting information regarding the Olympics in Atlanta in 1996. In order for Atlanta as a city to be able to set up for such a monumental event such as the Olympics, the community had to hire several thousand illegal aliens to help. This is not only going against the tradition of the game, but even more so ironic. However it does show two countries working together towards one common goal. The overall number of illegal citizens in Atlanta after the Olympics went up almost two fold. This is some very intriguing information I found when researching for my Bibliography.

Once every four years the world’s finest athletes gather to compete in a series of competitions. This mass gathering is known as the Olympics. Many see the main purpose of the Olympics as winning as many medals as possible for one’s home country. However this mass gathering of cultures that only lasts about twenty five days takes years of coordinating and planning and is much more important than the medals. The few cities that are “fortunate” enough to be selected as hosts must make massive economic changes in order to successfully pull of such an event. In looking at the city of Atlanta, GA, who hosted the games in 1996, you can clearly see that hosting the “Summer Games” came along with consequences. This is the case because the drastic number of illegal immigrants that were brought in for the event’s labor. Though the immigrant population was initially welcomed for their services, the subsequent social and economic problems were devastating to the city from a social and political stand point, asking the ultimate question as to whether or not the Olympics are an event that is worthwhile.

1 There is a huge difference between a library database and the internet. A library database limits to only the books that are found in the particular library. Where as with the internet you are not limited whatsoever with the information you seek. However ultimately I believe it comes down to the issue of quality vs. quanitity. If you want more detail stick with the library where as if you want more options to choose from the internet is a better choice.
2. A bibliography is a detailed list of sources that were compiled to create a resourceful paper. Where as an annotated bibliography a more strictly enforced format in which a bibliography is written.
3. Creditable sources can be found in many different places. The most creditable however are primary sources. These sources derive from books, newspaper articles, magazines, and other sources of media that correlate directly with the event in question.
4. No I would not create an exact research plan when creating a research paper. This is simply because I find the best way to research is in fact by being spontaneous and open minded. For this very reason having an exact research strategy would not be effective for me and my writing style.
5. Plagiarism is the act of using a source as your own without giving proper credit to your real source. This is a common issue associated with students at schools. Cheating is also associated with the act of plagiarism. The only way to avoid plagiarism is effective research that properly credits all of it's sources.

My Response to My Secret Image In Class Writing

My image is the Playboy is degrading to women image. This image is not only interesting, but also controversial. I made this image to prove that Playboy is getting an unfair amount of blame for the girls that are found in it's issues. Rather than blaming Playboy as a whole you must blame the girls who volunteer to pose. If you look in the background you can see that its the little pieces that work all together to create the Playboy image as a whole. The statistic that 22% of teenage females further proves this point. My main argument is that we as society tend to place the blame on those who represent an image, not those who create it.

SWA # 6 Blog 2

The second video I viewed was the 1994 Mac commercial. In this commercial Mac's main claim was that it was superior to the Windows computer that so many people were familiar with. Mac drew these comparisons by finding flaws in Windows system and creating a new computer that had corrected some minor mistakes that could possibly upset the costumer. Mac in essence exploits windows numerous times, claiming that their product is better, even though the commercial never exactly says those words. An example of this is when they show how a Mac can read a CD, where as a with a Window's computer the whole process was too complicated. Whether or not the process of watching a CD on an old Windows computer was complicated did not matter, because the Mac commercial did a very good job of showing how much more attractive their product looked with regard to this particular asset of the computer. The ultimate claim that Mac computer's are better than Window's was targeted for all of those who grew frustrated with their computers every now and then. Mac's claim probably ended up helping their business dramatically because many probably made the assumption that unlike Window's, Mac would not have any technical difficulties. This fact is false, but regardless the claim of the advertisement holds strong.

SWA #6 Blog 1

I watched the first Mac advertisement video that was made in 1984. This video is very unique in the fact that it was the unveiling of the prominent company that we all know today. However the main claim that this commercial is making is that the people of that time were all very limited with their options when it came to purchasing a computer. However Mac's advertisement claimed that they were going to completely change the way that people see the PC (Personal Computer). This commercial is targeting those who were looking for the new biggest technological innovation. The zombie like mode that the commercial creates almost in essence builds up more of a hype for the release of Mac's new computer. The hype was all about Mac, because no one had ever before seen or used another computer than a Windows. Overall the claim that technology was limited and the Mac was going to change that proved true.

I am choosing the image of the girl who locked herself out of her room on purpose. This image is interesting because you can infer that this is a girl after critically thinking about it. You can do so in looking at her handwriting, color of ink, and use of colloquialism. First off the handwriting is girly so you can assume that it must be that of a girl. Next the use of the color pink is generally associated with feminism. Finally the use of the word cute is a girly term that not many guys say. Overall this image is created in order to convince the viewer that a girl must have been responsible for such a note.

http://failblog.files.wordpress.com/2008/03/protests_fail.jpg

First off this image is very controversial. Here stands what you can presumably consider a gay man advocating gay sex. The conflict in this is that in the background there is another man holding a sign that demeans gays in general. The fact of the matter is the issue of being gay isn't the true problem I see, but the fact that people are trying to enforce particular standards, and or life styles upon others who are already happy with who they are. Not to say I necessarily think that the man is making the correct decision in being gay, that is if it is even a decision at all, but I firmly believe people have the personal right to decide how they want to live as long as it does not affect anyone else's life. In fact the man protesting the gay man is actually affecting his life for no reason what so ever, presumably labeling him the wrong doer out of the two. Whether it has to do with race, gender, religion, sexuality, or etc. I firmly believe everyone is entitled to their own personal beliefs, beliefs that should not be hindered by others who do not necessarily agree.

ICW- Visual Text

A visual argument differs from a written arguments of many levels. First perception can be interpreted in numerous ways. With a written argument it is more clear as to what the actual argument is. You can only see the main argument being made when having a visual to look at with no further evidence or support to back up a claim/and or an argument. Further more a written arguement can explain as to how or why they feel the way they do in this certain manner.

SWA #2 Persuasion

Is persuasion dead? This is the question Matt Miller brings forth in The Carolina Reader's Is Persuasion Dead. I believe his main point is to show that if it is not already dead it is tainted. Now a days there are some many ways of reaching people via internet, television, radio, etc. However not everything that we hear through the media is always made out what it's supposed to be. For example you hear on television free meal, then if you look close in the bottom in small fine print you can see "limited time only, with purchase of a medium beverage, only while supplies last, and so on. Your in essence being deceived. Politicians are another great example. When campaigning most politicians say whatever it is they need to say to get them into office. How is this American society supposed to perceive this. It is tainted, the main point Miller is trying to get across.

SWA#1 My Best and Worst Writing Experiences

My best writing experience came when I was Junior in high school and I was taking the most difficult class in the entire school known as American Studies. At the beginning of the second semester our teacher gave us five months to complete a research paper that was to be no shorter than ten pages. Well I was pretty intimidated, but decided rather than procrastinate I'd do a little every week. After about six weeks I was done and had the rest of my semester to enjoy.
My worst writing experience came when I was given a similar assignment in my Sophomore year of high school. Rather than doing a little at a time I found myself cramming it all in the last possible week I could. The grades reflected the difference between the two one very good paper where as one was border line to say to most.

A. Copy the text below into your own blog:

Essay Author and Title:

If You Run a Red Light, Will Everyone Know?

Central Argument of the Essay:
(p.xx) You can only argue for or against an online criminal database once you have been called a criminal in first hand.

My Central Claim about the nature/effectiveness of the argument in the essay:
You never know of true justice unless you've experienced in justice

This is how the author manipulated the rhetorical appeals:

  • The logos appeal:Obviously there is an appeal to have people be able to know what sort of people they are living with on a daily basis.

  • The ethos appeal: Gives credit to the online criminal databases for making records once hard to come by more acessible.

  • The pathos appeal: Appealing to the families who live in fear of the criminals in society.

My conclusion about the nature/effectiveness of the argument in the essay:

The author is clearly trying to prove that you can never say for sure how you truly feel about the online criminal databases until your record is no longer clean.

B. Choose one of the articles from chapter 10 and substitute the Xs with your words. You will need to locate and paraphrase the thesis sttement of the essay you re analysing and to develop your own main and supporting claims. For each point, you need to boild down your text to one or two sentences only!

These will work as your working thesis and topic sentences for the Rhetorical Analysis #1.

Online Criminal Databases

I firmly believe that online criminal data bases are in fact both useful and harmful. This meaning simply that it is a huge invasion of private records that would be harder to obtain without the internet. This somewhat interferes with a criminal's ability to get over the past. It's an unfair stigma that has just been recently brought about, but ultimately it was brought apon themself. The essay is mainly trying to prove that your opinion can not truly be determined until you experience first hand.

Are Bloggers Journalist

Absolutely not. Obtaining the status of a journalist takes years of dedication and study, where as a blogger is an ordinary person posting their opinions to share with the world on the internet. Regardless of how smart or well articulated one's blog may be, it is not fair to associate bloggers with true journalists. How would you feel if you trained your entire life to become a professional writer, then all of the sudden one day the internet essentially gave everyone this ability without any of the work. The fact of the matter remains that a journalist is an actual profession where as a blogger is a social networking tool that allows people to express their opinions of the internet. Not to say that some people such as Perez Hilton have not found tremendous success through the world of blogging, but to label him a journalist would be sheer blasphemy. The essay in the Carolina Reader, Are Bloggers Journalists approaches the issue with a sense of caution. It is as idiotic as it is disrespectful to put the writing from citizens of any age on the same level as a well renowned writer for a prestigious Newspaper such as the New York Times. In conclusion I vehemently believe that a blogger will always remain only a blogger until a degree proves otherwise.
