SWA #2 Persuasion
Is persuasion dead? This is the question Matt Miller brings forth in The Carolina Reader's Is Persuasion Dead. I believe his main point is to show that if it is not already dead it is tainted. Now a days there are some many ways of reaching people via internet, television, radio, etc. However not everything that we hear through the media is always made out what it's supposed to be. For example you hear on television free meal, then if you look close in the bottom in small fine print you can see "limited time only, with purchase of a medium beverage, only while supplies last, and so on. Your in essence being deceived. Politicians are another great example. When campaigning most politicians say whatever it is they need to say to get them into office. How is this American society supposed to perceive this. It is tainted, the main point Miller is trying to get across.

I agree with what you wrote on Miller's Essay. He is obviously trying to show that persuasion is somethign that is not being used as much as it used to be. Politicians only say what their polls have already determined the people want to hear.
ReplyDeleteAfter reading your argument i have to agree also. It seems today it consists more of people trying to trick and decieve other people then to really try and persuade them.
